In unsurprising fashion, Shaun White was the class of Superpipe. “I probably didn’t need that second run … but I wanted to step it up, I wanted to do the double back rodeo, because that was something I haven’t really stuck in a contest yet,” White said. “I came around and just kind of gave up mid rotation and tried to land it as a 900 instead of going full double. And for me it’s annoying, I’m going to have to stick it at the next one. Otherwise it’ll make my mind melt.

“I’m very excited,” White continued. “I’m coming off a knee injury and a wrist surgery, and to ride like I did, it’s great. You always question how you’re going to feel when you come back in the first contest of the season. To get a win with runs like that, it’s great.”

Taku Hiraoka and Ayumu Hirano, both teenagers from Japan, also put together impressive displays. Hirano looked like he was on the verge of a podium finish with his second run, before catching his board on the edge of the halfpipe for an ugly spill. Hiraoka ended up 3rd and was recognized as the most stylish rider in the Final.

In the women’s snowboard Superpipe Final, Maddy Schaffrick managed to improve on last season’s 4th-place result, making her way onto the podium with a solid run for 3rd.
